One of the worlds leading hospitals for pediatric health is fundraising to build a new hospital. The Sick Kids Foundation is campaigning to raise 1.3 billion dollars, in order to build a second Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. The hospital was built in 1951, they then added what is now called the atrium in 1993.
Now, in 2018, the hospital is in need of new, state of the art technology, better breakthrough research, and to partner for better care. “A lot of the technology is out of date and it just is necessary. There really isn’t a choice.”, says Sandra Chiovitti, The Director of Public Relations for The Sick Kids Foundation, “We need to rebuild the hospital for the future generations of children’s health.”
One of the other main reasons why they need to build another hospital is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Currently, there are 453 beds in Sick Kids Hospital, with 38 of them being in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “There’s at least 4 babies in every room, although there is space for 6”, says Melissa Jones, who’s a patient ambassador at Sick Kids, “The bed spaces are incredibly small, you have to stay within this red tape on the floor.”
Even to respect patient privacy, Jones says it can be stressful, “One measure we do here to increase privacy is having parents put on headphones, while doctors come in and speak to other families, about their babies”, but even then, Jones says you can still see the news they’re getting, “It’s not without its stress for the parent sitting there because you can still see people’s faces and know if they’re getting good news or bad news.”
The Sick Kids VS campaign launched in October of 2017 and will run until March 31, 2022. The VS campaign is all about coming together and fighting the fight to build a new hospital for children’s health. So far, the Sick Kids VS campaign and the Sick Kids Foundation have raised over 700 million dollars, just over halfway to their goal of 1.3 billion dollars. ”
How To Get Involved
“Volunteering your time, giving at the holiday season.”, Chiovitti says, is one of the ways you can get involved, “Joining your crew if you can, your support really makes a difference. Every donation matters”. If you’d like to donate, you can go to the Sick Kids Foundation website, you can do a one-time donation, monthly or a dedication donation, volunteer your time to help a good cause and you can also join your crew by purchasing a hoodie or t-shirt with your crew on it.
